I would appear to have a thing for guys with wings. xD Drawn for RPGamer's "A Little Summon Summon" round of the Omniart 2005 contest. I came in third xD;;
"The possibilities of SO2's Warrior of Light legend always fascinated me, as it is never resolved. Claude as the Warrior: I imagined a crusader-angel, for its religious origins. In Star Ocean spirit, I also tried to incorporate colour/light science and recognizable character symbols (Claude's insignia, the Calnus)."
That's the max-50-word description that accompanied my entry XD;; But I'm a blabbery person, and there was so much more I wanted to say. ;_; I apologize for the size, but I didn't want to lose some of the detail in the watercolour.
Usually when you think of an RPG character or summon to do with light, you think of angels. Which is ... kinda clichéd in my opinion And since I already wanted to have the religious subtext in the picture, I couldn't escape it. (Hypocrite! xD So to make it more original, I wanted to work in a bit of science, which also fits with the entire sci-fi backdrop of the series.
Colour science was the most obvious choice, and I've always liked that topic anyways. Colour that we see is light reflected at different wavelengths, running from red to violet (rainbow!). White is the presence of all colours reflected equally, while black is the absence of any colour. Using the additive colour theory (the "direct to light" one, shall we say), red, green and blue combine to form all other colours. You can only see the red on on his right (our left) wing, but the design is supposed to have a green orb on the other wing and a blue orb at the back. XD;;; So RGB is combining to make WINGS OF WHITE LIGHT OHHH~~ The wings are actually attached to the gold halo thingy, not to his back. ^^
Also, beyond the spectrum of wavelengths that the human eye can see, there is infrared - which we experience as heat - and ultraviolet - which we experience as horrific cancer-inducing burns! XDDD That's why the weapon - my interpretation of the Sword of Light - has a violet trail. It's ULTRAVIOLET! XD It's a weapon, it should be dangerous. I originally wanted the Sword of Light to actually BE light, which would make sense, but I didn't think I could handle ANOTHER light source in addition to the four I already have - the lighting is already pretty wonky. XD;;
In case it weren't obvious, the gold halo thing is the shape of the Calnus, the spaceship featured so prominently in SO2. ^^ Because spaceships give man wings! XD The shape is also repeated on his ... battleskirt? xD
Finally, I wanted the entire piece to have a concept art feel, so I also did storyboards of the summoning sequence (I typed "summon sequence" on there, oh well) in pen and blue and yellow pencil crayon. I was going to do an exit sequence as well, but got too lazy. That's for the better, I guess, since the entire thing was getting rather cluttered. xD;;
Wowie! That is so amazing! o_o'' Your traditional work blows my mind. You're really good with color. ;0; That pose rocks and the whole sequence of it is really cool!! ^__^
When I saw this over at RPGamer I waws especially impressed with the halo being the outline of the ship ^_^ You put so much thought and detail into this peice! Kudos!
Yeaaah I was a lame-o and had to post it when I finished it as like, I dont really DO much illust work on the side these days *le sigh* But Im really glad your image placed! Granted your a fab artists and that means hard competition in the future (BWAR!) but I guess thats the point XD
Neat. Like everyone else said, wonderful work with the colors and the costume. I can imagine the sequence being fully animated for some reason (I never played any of the SO games).
