STAR SIGNS by maiji STAR SIGNS by maiji
This is actually a set of five different paintings done with watercolour and white gel pen.
I posted photos of my work in progress on each painting on tumblr, as well as a photo of the freshly matted paintings! You can see them all here: maiji.tumblr.com/post/81639429…

It's been a long time since I've actually done a series of illustrations! It was really exciting to see them all come together. I listened to Counting Stars on loop (the original version, as well as covers) while scanning/colour correcting and matting the paintings~

I'll have prints available at Anime North animenorth.com/ Comic Market - and the original watercolours will be on display and available for purchase at the Gallery Momiji Art Show. I hope that if the originals are sold, they somehow are bought by the same person so that they can stay together forever ... but who knows ...

If you're going to Anime North, hope to see you there~!

Hahah, that's impressive! I had to look them all up and was getting confused because some of them would be different depending on the source (e.g., sometimes Andromeda was missing stars because they removed the ones that were also part of Pegasus etc.)

Hnghhh this is one of my most favorite methods to see in watercolor, the color around blending into the picture. They're all so gorgeous and lively looking~

Thank you very much for the kind words! I agree, I love that floating bleeding quality that watercolour has. I'm trying to do a lot more of it in my works. ^^ Sometimes I get scared that I'll mess up the picture though xD;

I really must start working more with paint, I scarcely do enough. I always have to be so careful because I'll dab a tiny bit of watercolor onto the paper, and it starts spreading everywhere and making its own colony. You must have great control when it comes to that, being the hair isn't trying to infiltrate their skin xD

Haha xD I do find the more you do the more comfortable you will get with working with and around the behaviour of watercolour. I used to freak out and then drown everything with water so that I could wipe off all the "mistakes" but now I'm a bit better about letting the watercolour just do its thing and having serendipitous moments or happy accidents that give the piece more character. :) And also thinking about layering and learning to let parts of the painting dry before continuing to work on it later (I'm super impatient so that was hard haha)

I definitely have to keep the waiting thing in mind when painting. I'll be sitting there tapping the paintbrush and saying "Dry already, drryyyyy." so I can get on with the painting xD I'll have to dig around and find my watercolor pads so I can practice the layering some more.

I've seen some people use hair dryers to try to get the painting to dry faster. I tried it once and in the end I just went off to do something else and come back another day, I find that works better for me xD

Our last hairdryer broke years ago, so idling myself with other things will have to do xD Gawd knows I have enough art projects to work on in between if my memory would remind me of them.

Thank you so much! Your work has a lovely mood to it too, very much like watercolour - I was surprised to see that it was all labeled digital. Do you do watercolour painting yourself? :)

Impressive~!

I love watercolour because it is inexpensive, very portable, and also forgiving. Hopefully you'll get to try it too and enjoy it! :)
