EDIT: This was originally entered into the Bring Your Vision to Life Good vs. Evil contact. Now that the contest is over, I've added my sig/site link onto the image and also changed the category to make it available as a print. ^^

Pencil, watercolour, some white gouache. My first time using frisket too. I totally didn't think I'd have enough time to enter this contest but managed to finish this piece in two very intense days XD;;

I have a hard time believing in absolute good or evil, and this is an abstract representation of that idea - good versus evil being two sides of the same coin - in a sort of fairy tale illustration.

You might say it's a strange interpretation of Snow White and her Prince come to rescue her. But does she need rescuing, and anyways, is he?

This is the idea of the poison and the antidote. Poison is so often used to represent something negative and evil, but ironically the cure, the antidote, is often created by using the poison. To add to that, many natural venoms/toxins are likely key to creating some of the most beneficial medicines in the world.

In medieval lore the unicorn's horn was a protection against poison. "Authentic" unicorn artifacts are often actually the narwhal's spiraled tusk, which of course isn't going to be saving your life any time soon.

Aside from the narwhal and the "apple of the sea" (actually a sea cucumber), all of the creatures featured in Snow White's "dress" are poisonous. They are:

- crown - Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (Acanthaster planci)
- collar - Faint-banded Sea snake/Belcher's Sea Snake (Hydrophis belcheri)
- Fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra - although they wouldn't really be found this deep in the water, but they are so cute I had to draw them XD)
- sleeves - Portuguese Man-of-War (Physalia physalis)
- dress decoration - poisonous sea anemones
- dress - Red lionfish (Pterois volitans)

Her dress is kinda freaky, I know. XD;;; He looks like he's about to kill it. XDD

I like the dress a lot! Well, I guess I like oceanic themes a lot in general.

Thank you so much! :D It was fun to come up with what all the components of her outfit would be.

Wow, such an incredible concept and design. I'm really admiring your take on this! The use of so many sea creatures, all poisonous at the same time, just add a sense of mystery to the female character. I love it!

Also, if I was the guy, I'd be trying to kill that dress too before it ate me. xD

Ah, thank you so much! :blushes:

I actually had to adjust his head and close his eyes because it seriously looked too much like he was gazing longingly at the fish. XDDD
